We had a delay on one of the meals, although the young lady read the meals back, most of us are deaf! It may be good to double check the amount of meals to the number of people.
Also the dessert menu was written in a very very small font and needs to be a 12/14 so you can read it clearly. We all had a lovely time though and will be back!

We keep coming back to the Rose and Thorne for its excellent food, choice of well kept real ale, picturesque setting and friendly service. It retains the best of a real pub's atmosphere with efficient, customer care focus.
The above mark for value reflects a menu that stated a 10% or 12% voluntary service charge yet the final bill added a 15% charge. This needs sorting out.

I have always loved the Rose and Thistle, affectionately known as the RAT. I was treated to lunch on Tuesday so suggested we went to the Rose and Thistle. I only wanted a light lunch so ordered the crab bruschetta from the starter menu priced at £10.95. Quite pricey so I was expecting a reasonable portion, however there was just one small bruschetta with about a tablespoon of crab meat on the top - devoured in 2 mouthfuls. Not good value, I was too embarrassed to complain as I was not paying. If the waitress had informed me that there were more lunch options on the back of the menu I could have had a crab sandwich for the same price, far more satisfying!

We found the room quite cold. Although the fire was alight it wasn’t sending out much heat, and there were no other diners that Saturday lunchtime , so it wasn’t as comfortable an experience as it could have been.

So great to be back at the R&T after such a long lock-down! Really take my hat off to Chris and his team for the phenomenal efforts they have gone to to make their pub a safe place to be. I am sorry to say that all three of our party were very disappointed with our meals.
I would like to point out that the service was excellent and we have no complaints in that area
The food was advertised as becoming of an ‘even better standard’ with a new chef and that is why we took as advantage of the 3 for 30 offer.
It was. However very poor value.
The terrine was tasty but slightly dry and came with very little sauce, chutney or bread to accompany it.
The soufflé was very nice but the £2.50 surcharge seemed gratuitous.
The hake was over cooked and the skin too highly seasoned, the cauliflower was not roasted fully and remained rather limp. The veloute was thick in places and very runny in others. The cauliflower cous cous was acidic, cold and unpleasant to eat with the rest of the dish
The onglet was an even greater disappointment as it was incredibly tough, chewy and with little flavour. The two people in our party who had the onglet said that they couldn’t remember having a worse piece of meat. The silver skin was still on the steak and so it tightened up and was very difficult to remove. We recognise that this is a firmer cut of meat, however this was not our experience as it was more than firm, being unpleasant and almost impossible to chew.
The spinach was well cooked and enjoyable
The sweetcorn fritters were doughy and undercooked
The bill came to £143 which was astronomical for the over all quality of every element of the meal.
The person who served us kindly took 15% off the bill but we believe that £122 for what we received was still excessive and the experience has dented our confidence in the restaurant more widely

We loved everything about our visit to the Rose & Thistle for lunch. The food was attractively presented and delicious. I would recommend the Guinea fowl and the bread and butter pudding with custard is to die for!

Our food was excellent and very good value. The downside was that even though it is May temperatures are low. It was cold. Lovely fire there which if lit would have enhanced the whole experience. We have been before in the height of summer but a chilly atmosphere is depressing. Loved the Rarebit.

This is a charming cosy pub in a very pretty village even when raining. We were able to walk to the pub and was very pleasant. The menu choices were spot on, food of good proportions, well cooked and tasty. The staff were excellent - friendly polite and attentive. We really enjoyed our visit and will go back. A big plus - no wif or mobile phone signal so leave those devices in the car.

Superb village pub with a lovely garden. The host was really friendly and welcoming and the service brilliant. We enjoyed a long, lazy lunch but there was nothing tired about the food. It was delicious and freshly cooked. If you’re visiting Martin Down nature reserve and need to refuel, make sure you swing by - it’s lovely.

Really cosy pub with a bar and a restaurant area. Low ceilings, warm fire, decent beer, good friendly service and good food. My personal recommendation is the steak and kidney pudding. You will find many pubs offering a steak and kidney pie, but not many offering a traditional suet pudding or using such good quality steak. Bracket this with a cheese souffle and a crumble and you needn't eat for two days.

Pleasant smiley staff, clear Covid instructions etc, prompt service and delicious food! My GF pate/toast was excellent and we both agreed the sea bass really good ( although something was a bit over salted, maybe the prawns?) Loved it!
